In conjunction with Dr. Kris Kowdley at the Benaroya Resaerch Institute, the Roth lab is utilizing the resources of the NASH Clinical Research Network (NASH CRN), collected in >3500 pediatric and adult patients throughout the US, to investigate the possible association between serum vitamin D levels and NAFLD in the largest, comprehensive study performed to date. Utilizing NASH CRN serum samples, and associated data from multiple NASH CRN studies and ancillary studies we will determine whether VDD is a risk factor for progression of NAFLD and will investigate potential mechanisms whereby VDD triggers NASH, such as altered glucose metabolism, increased oxidative stress and inflammation.
