Collaborating to cure neurological disorders

In contrast to conventional therapies that alleviate symptoms, the center’s goal is to identify and correct the underlying causes of neurological disorders.  To accomplish this, the center’s researchers integrate knowledge at the genetic, molecular, cellular, network, and behavioral levels to better understand a wide spectrum of neuronal functions and brain-related diseases. By unraveling how these facets work together to spawn disorders, our researchers are setting the stage for innovative, comprehensive therapies that cure those disorders.

The Seattle Children’s Research Institute campus occupies 310,000 square feet of research space across three downtown locations in the heart of Seattle’s biomedical community, about 10 miles south of Seattle Children’s Hospital.  CIBR is located in the Jack R. MacDonald Building, an 11-story state-of-the-art building, encompassing approximately 215,000 square feet of office and research space, including a state-of-the art barrier vivarium.  The building has easy access via public transportation to the nearby University of Washington and Seattle Children’s Hospital, and is also adjacent to the extensive University of Washington laboratories at the South Lake Union campus. Within the SCRI facility, dedicated space houses small equipment for protein purification, electrophoresis, and molecular biology. Numerous tissue culture, mass spectroscopy, microscopy, fluorimaging, spectroscopy, fermentation, and flow cytometry facilities are all located either within CIBR space or on adjacent floors of the building.

 

CIBR moved into the 10th floor of Building 1 in 2009, with space specifically designed to facilitate ongoing exchange of tools and ideas among the investigators.   CIBR faculty and staff currently occupy a total of 7,200 square feet of office space and 14,069 square feet of lab space, including 21 offices, 40 lab bays, and separate rooms dedicated to microscopy (500 sq. ft.), electrophysiology (820 sq. ft.), tissue culture (462 sq. ft.), chemical preparation (360 sq. ft.),  conferenceroom (240 sq. ft.) and kitchen (132 sq. ft.).

 

World-Class Neuroscience Team

Since his arrival at Seattle Children’s in 2008, CIBR Director Dr. Nino Ramirez has been assembling a team of renowned neuroscience      experts.   As midcareer researchers, these investigators bring not only established expertise and funding, but also a willingness to work together toward cures that improve the lives of children and families worldwide.  A primary mission of the research faculty is the training and mentorship of a new generation of talented young investigators.  Collaboration with clinicians at Seattle Children’s Hospital is also an essential part of our research effort, resulting in research that is relevant to patients and families, as well as an opportunity to see our research results translated into real-world solutions.
