The RA Workshop is designed to help those who:
- Are new to the RA role this year (especially RAs in their first or second year)
- Have some experience being an RA but are new to UW
- Have some experience being an RA at UW but are undertaking a new type of RA role this year
NOTE: If you are an RA with more than two years of experience, you are
welcome to attend. However, workshop topics are oriented primarily to those
who are newer to the RA role. If you have RA experience and great success
strategies to pass on to newer RAs, we encourage you to sign up as a panelist
for one of the sessions. There is still room. See Call for Panelists.
When does the RA Workshop take place?
The 5th Annual Workshop for Graduate Research Assistants is scheduled for September 18, 2008. For a program, see Schedule.
How is the RA Workshop different from the TA Conference?
The two events are separate and are
designed specifically to address different audiences. The RA Workshop
is designed to increase new and nearly new RAs’ awareness of strategies
and resources to enhance their effectiveness an RA at UW, whereas the
TA Conference consists of numerous workshops to build TAs skills for
enhancing teaching and learning on this campus.
Should graduate students attend both the TA Conference and the RA Workshop?
Graduate students who expect to have
both TA and RA appointments in any department during this year, and who
are relatively new to these roles and/or to UW, should plan to attend
both events.
What if the RA Workshop conflicts with departmental events scheduled for the same day?
Department events take precedence over
the RA Workshop. RAs are invited to attend as much of the Workshop as they can at times when it does not conflict with required
department meetings or events.
What should RAs do if they cannot attend the RA Workshop (or some portion)?
This is an invitational workshop and a
professional development resource that The Graduate School and The Center for Instructional Development and Research are providing for RAs. RAs are encouraged to attend and benefit from the workshop if it doesn’t conflict with required departmental events. RAs can also
attend a portion of the Workshop, but are encouraged to participate in
the entire workshop to benefit fully from it.
What if departmental RA appointments are not yet finalized?
Departments should encourage graduate
students to attend who are likely to be newly appointed (or
reappointed) as RAs at some point during this year.
Will another RA Workshop be offered later this year?
The RA Workshop will take place once
per year, so participants should definitely plan to attend on September
18th, even if their RA appointments will not begin until Winter or
Spring Quarter.
How are RAs informed of the RA Workshop?
Departments will be asked to forward to their RAs, an invitation to attend from Suzanne Ortega, Dean of The Graduate School and Vice Provost. A Workshop Flyer will be distributed to departments for
posting, and UW RAs will receive an email invitation from Dean Ortega before the Workshop.
Are international RAs “required” to attend the RA Workshop?
The RA Workshop is invitational, so
international Research Assistants are not required to attend. However,
those who are new to the RA role or new to the UW are strongly
encouraged to attend if the Workshop schedule does not conflict with
required departmental meetings or events.
NOTE: If you expect to be appointed as a Teaching Assistant
this year, please explore the 2008 TA Conference’s events for
