2007 TA Conference on Teaching and Learning

Information for Facilitators

The Center for Instructional Development and Research (CIDR) and the Graduate School are seeking applications for TA Facilitators for the TA Conference on Teaching and Learning, which will be held September 17-19, 2007.

Conference Information

The University of Washington will offer its annual conference for TAs who are either new to teaching roles at this university or who are undertaking different teaching responsibilities than they previously held. The TA Conference on Teaching and Learning is organized by CIDR, an office on campus that provides information, consultation, and programs to help faculty and TAs excel in teaching and experience the satisfaction that results from teaching well.

Conference workshops are designed to create awareness about college teaching, provide some techniques and strategies for effective teaching, reduce some of the anxiety that new TAs often feel when beginning to teach, and suggest resources for further information.

TAs attending the Conference will be able to sign up for one or many workshops that will help them prepare for their specific teaching assignments. These workshops will take place in small groups of 25-30 and will be facilitated by an experienced TA and/or faculty and staff from across the campus.

What is a TA Conference Workshop Facilitator?

We are looking for graduate students who have had TA experience here at UW, and who are interested in helping new TAs develop their teaching and professional skills. Once selected, Facilitators will indicate the workshop topics in which they have an interest, and the time periods during which they will be available during the three days of the Conference.

CIDR staff will coordinate orientation sessions for all TA Facilitators. At these orientation sessions we will work together to plan goals, content, materials and activities for each of the workshops. We will work with all TA Facilitators on resources and activities. Facilitators will be paid a $50 stipend for the first time they lead a particular workshop ($35 for each workshop facilitated more than once).

In addition to facilitating TA Conference workshops planned by CIDR staff, you may also be interested in proposing your own workshop to be added to the conference program. For more information, see the Call for Workshops.

Apply to become a TA Conference Workshop Facilitator

If you are interested in becoming a TA Conference facilitator, please complete the Online Facilitator Application. This online form asks you for contact information, days you are available to facilitate TA Conference workshops, a summary of your UW teaching experience, and a brief (250-word) statement on how you help students learn.

To help keep our server from getting overloaded, there is a 30-minute time limit for filling out the form, so you may want to draft your responses prior to opening the Facilitator Application:

After you complete the application, you will receive an email confirmation of the receipt of your application. Shortly after this a CIDR staff member will contact you to set up an interview. During your interview, we will discuss possible workshop assignments and schedules and can also answer any additional questions you may have.
