2008 TA Conference on Teaching and Learning

Call for Workshops

Is there something you wish someone had told you when you were a new TA? Do you have research or expertise on teaching and learning you would like to share? Would you like the experience of presenting to an audience of fellow graduate students at an interdisciplinary conference? If so, this may be just the opportunity for you!

The Center for Instructional Development and Research (CIDR) and the Graduate School are seeking workshop proposals for the TA Conference on Teaching and Learning, which will be held September 16-17, 2008.

Conference Information

The University of Washington will offer its annual conference for TAs who are either new to teaching roles at this university or who are undertaking different teaching responsibilities than they previously held. The TA Conference on Teaching and Learning is organized by CIDR, an office on campus that provides information, consultation, and programs to help faculty and TAs excel in teaching and experience the satisfaction that results from teaching well.

Conference workshops are designed to create awareness about college teaching, provide some techniques and strategies for effective teaching, reduce some of the anxiety that new TAs often feel when beginning to teach, and suggest resources for further information.

TAs attending the Conference will be able to sign up for one or many workshops that will help them prepare for their specific teaching assignments. These workshops will take place in small groups of 25-30 and will be facilitated by an experienced TA and/or faculty and staff from across the campus.

Workshop Proposals

We are soliciting proposals for Special Topics Workshops from experienced TAs (3 quarters or more of experience). Special Topics Workshops should:

  • Avoid duplication of the Core Workshop Sessions.
  • Fit into a 75-minute time slot.
  • Address an audience broader than a single department or discipline, as the TA conference is meant to supplement, not take the place of, departmental training.
  • Be focused around practical application(s) TAs can use in their courses, rather than theory-driven discussions.
  • Actively engage the audience.

If your proposal is accepted, you will be the sole facilitator for it. Therefore, please only submit a proposal if you anticipate being present for the conference! Graduate students who wish to become Core Session facilitators can also submit proposals for Special Topics Workshops.

Submission Guidelines

If you are interested, please submit a summary of your workshop idea including the following:

  • Name, email address, and UW Box #
  • Summary of your teaching experience (UW and otherwise)
  • Title of proposed workshop
  • Target audience - Who would benefit most from your proposed workshop?
  • Description - Please provide a brief description (2-4 sentences) or your objectives and your plan for your workshop.

For more information or to submit a proposal, send a message to TAConference@cidr.washington.edu.
