What is TA Conference on Teaching and Learning?

The TA Conference on Teaching and Learning is a conference designed to help you prepare for your roles and responsibilities as a TA at UW, and to provide you with an opportunity to develop your skills as a scholar teaching in your discipline. The event supplements activities conducted in individual departments, and many departments recommend specific workshops for their TAs to attend.

Other Frequently Asked Questions

When does the TA Conference take place?

The 2009 TA Conference on Teaching and Learning is scheduled for Tuesday, September 22, 2009.  (Note: The International TA Program workshops will take place on Monday, September 21st from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. in Smith Hall, Room 120.)

Other Frequently Asked Questions

Who should attend the TA Conference?

Workshops at the TA Conference on Teaching and Learning are designed for UW graduate students, including those who are

  • new to teaching
  • experienced at teaching, but new to UW, or
  • experienced at teaching at UW, but are preparing for a different kind of TA role than they have held before

Most workshops will be led by experienced graduate students, faculty, and staff from departments throughout the university, who will draw on their experiences helping students learn at UW. Workshops are designed to provide a forum for discussing effective teaching, allowing you to raise your questions and concerns and to interact with facilitators and fellow TAs.

Other Frequently Asked Questions

What should TAs do if they can't attend?

If your department requires TAs to attend TA Conference Workshops, but you are not able to attend, please notify your department. To find out what your department requires, please review information you have received from your department, or view the List of Department Recommendations.

Other Frequently Asked Questions

What if TA Conference workshops conflict with department events scheduled for the same day?

Department events take precedence over the TA Conference. Many departments have recommended specific TA Conference workshops for their TAs to attend. View the List of Department Recommendations.

TAs are invited to attend as much of Conference as possible at those times when it does not conflict with department meetings or events.

Other Frequently Asked Questions

My department has also asked me to attend the RA Workshop. Where can I find out more about that?

The 2009 RA Workshop is scheduled for Wednesday, September 23, 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. You can view the RA Workshop web site for more information about what takes place at this session.

Other Frequently Asked Questions

If TAs miss TA Conference in September, can they attend another workshop later in the year?

The TA Conference takes place once per year, so TAs should plan to attend in September even if their TA appointments don't begin until Winter or Spring Quarter.

Other Frequently Asked Questions

What should we do if TA appointments are not yet finalized?

Graduate students who are likely to be appointed as TAs should be informed of TA Conference as soon as possible so that they can plan accordingly.

Other Frequently Asked Questions

How are new TAs informed of the TA Conference?

Each year by the end of April, departments are asked to identify their newly appointed TAs for the following academic year. CIDR then contacts these individuals on behalf of the Graduate School with information about the TA Conference.

Other Frequently Asked Questions

How does the TA Conference relate to the International TA Program at CIDR?

The Graduate School requires all TAs who are not native speakers of English (with the exception of those who received a Bachelor’s degree from a U.S. institution) to participate in CIDR’s International TA Program. The International TA Program consists of two parts:

  • International TA Program Workshop sessions on the afternoon of Monday, September 21st in Smith 120.
  • Ongoing International TA Program workshops and activities during the academic year

For other questions related to international TAs, see Information for International Graduate Students.

Other Frequently Asked Questions

How can international TAs demonstrate proficiency in spoken English?

Proficiency in spoken English may be demonstrated by submitting a spoken English proficiency test score or by passing English 105. For more information, please see Information for International Graduate Students. If you would like to take the Versant English test administered at UW, please note:

  • The Versant Test is generally offered monthly by the Office of Educational Assessment. Additional sessions will be offered on Thursday, September 17th, 2009. To register for a test session on September 17th, please send an email to oeatests@u.washington.edu including the test date, your name, department and student number (if known). For more test dates and information, please see the Office of Educational Assessment Versant Test Information Sheet.
