CIDR works in partnership with departments and other academic units at UW to develop resources, projects, and events that contribute to teaching and learning excellence throughout the university:
Quarterly Forum on Teaching and Learning
One important partnership is CIDR’s Quarterly Forum, which is often jointly sponsored by others at UW. Examples of recent Forum co-sponsors include:
- Catalyst
- Center for Engineering Learning and Teaching
- College of Arts & Sciences
- College of Education
- College of Engineering
- Faculty Council on Instructional Quality
- Graduate School
- Office of Undergraduate Academic Affairs
- Teaching Academy
- Office of the Vice President and Vice Provost for Diversity
- NSF ADVANCE at UW
- UW Libraries
In addition to these Quarterly Forum collaborations, CIDR is often invited to partner with teaching and learning initiatives led by others at UW. Examples of recent partnerships include:
Center for Curriculum Transformation
CIDR has collaborated with the Center for Curriculum Transformation on numerous projects over the years. Recent examples include a CIDR Bulletin on “Transforming a Course,” and also the Center for Curriculum Transformation’s guide to “Building Diversity into Your Teaching Portfolio.”
College Writing Council
CIDR staff have regularly contributed to the work of the College Writing Council. CIDR resources that have emerged from this partnership include CIDR Bulletins on “Pieces of the Writing Puzzle” and “Teaching Writing-Integrated Courses.” This partnership has also led to CIDR Quarterly Forums on Writing, and CIDR’s ongoing participation in the 4x4 Writing Initiative (see below).
4x4 Writing Initiative
CIDR consultants worked together with Professor John Webster, Arts & Sciences Director of College Writing, to provide a series of workshops and consultation sessions for groups of faculty interested in more effectively integrating writing into their courses. For more information, see http://www.artsci.washington.edu/writing/
Annual Teaching and Learning Symposium
This annual event offers opportunities to interact with UW instructors who are actively engaged in examining teaching and learning in their disciplines. CIDR hosts this event in partnership with the Office of the Provost, the Faculty Council on Instructional Quality, the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Forum, the Center for Engineering Learning and Teaching, and the Teaching Academy. Preparing Future Faculty
CIDR works closely with the Graduate School on initiatives for graduate student professional development. The Graduate School asks CIDR to lead the Annual TA Conference on Teaching and Learning, which offers both preparation for new TAs and leadership development opportunities for experienced TAs who help design and facilitate sessions. CIDR staff regularly teach the Graduate School’s Interdisciplinary Courses on Teaching and Learning in Higher Education, and also contribute expertise to the Huckabay Fellowship program. CIDR also partners with the Center for Career Services on workshops and materials for graduate students entering the academic job market.
Catalyst
CIDR and Catalyst worked together to assess instructor and student use of Catalyst’s EPost Online Discussion tool. One of the outcomes of this collaboration is CIDR’s EPost Teaching Guide.
Disability Studies
CIDR’s work with the Disability Studies Pedagogy group led to the development of a CIDR Bulletin on “Including Disability as Diversity in Your Teaching,” and also a Quarterly Forum on the same topic.
School of Nursing
CIDR’s work with the UW School of Nursing led to the development of CIDR’s web guide on Planning for Teaching with the Web
The Teaching Academy
CIDR regularly partners with Teaching Academy programs for faculty, including Faculty Workshops on Teaching, the Institute for Teaching Excellence, and Faculty Fellows Workshops.
Faculty Council on Instructional Quality (FCIQ)
CIDR regularly contributes to FCIQ initiatives on teaching, including recommendations on the use of Student Evaluations and Teaching Portfolios at UW. Other recent collaborations with FCIQ include the Faculty Conversations Project, an initiative to launch faculty learning communities on the topic of diversity, and working with the Office of Educational Assessment to develop a classroom climate assessment instrument.
