A session presented at the 25th Annual Conference of the
Professional and Organizational Development Network
in Higher Education

November 10, 2000
Vancouver, British Columbia

Using CIDR's experience as a case study, we will demonstrate how general commitments to diversity and inclusiveness can be expressed in identifiable actions, which can then form a basis for assessment and chart directions for future growth. We will

  • present the diversity principles and practices document that we have developed
  • identify the turning points that helped move us ahead as we worked together to draft it, and
  • demonstrate how we use it as a tool for ongoing assessment and growth.

Participants will develop a plan for taking and assessing similar actions in their own settings.

This session is designed for instructional developers, faculty, and administrators who want to help their organizations specify roles and actions they can take to operationalize and assess their expressed commitments to diversity. This session will also be useful for people looking for ways to frame questions or tasks so that they can help members of a committee or task force move ahead together in response to diversity issues on campus.

The session will be divided into three segments

  1. Examining the complexity of diversity issues on our campuses, and articulating questions to help us begin to identify our unique roles and opportunities with respect to diversity and inclusiveness.
  2. Articulating actions consistent with our roles and opportunities.
  3. Discussing alternatives for assessing the actions we have identified, and a demonstration of how we have assessed our actions at CIDR.
