Assess and Improve Teaching in Your Department

CIDR is available to consult with chairs, curriculum committees, and other department representatives who are taking the lead on assessing and improving teaching in their departments.

Assessment of Teaching

CIDR provides resources for people who are in the position of making decisions about the quality of teaching by faculty or TAs in their departments:

  • Sources of Data for Assessment of Teaching

A complex activity like teaching is understood best when it is viewed from more than one perspective. At CIDR we propose making use of multiple sources of evidence on teaching, including information from students, peer observers, and the instructor him or herself. Each perspective offers valuable information, but none by itself gives the whole picture.

View CIDR's Assessment of Teaching Web Guide for more information about sources of data to consider.
Improving Teaching

CIDR offers many options for departments who want to foster improvements in teaching and learning:

  • Individual Consultations on Teaching for Faculty and TAs

CIDR staff consult individually with faculty and TAs who are interested in improving teaching and learning in their classes. Consultations are voluntary, confidential, and free for members of the UW teaching community. See our web pages on Consulting for more information about individual consultations for faculty and TAs at CIDR.

  • Program Consultation and Assessment Services for Departments

CIDR staff consult with departmental leadership and committee representatives on academic Program Development, Program Assessment, and departmental initiatives to improve teaching. See other links in the For Departments section of our web site for more information.

  • Events

CIDR offers a wide variety of workshops at the Annual TA Conference on Teaching and Learning, and also hosts the Quarterly Forum on Teaching and Learning for members of the UW teaching community. In addition, CIDR is available throughout the year to work with your department to develop customized workshops on teaching and learning for your faculty and TAs, and to contribute to your department's TA Preparation program.

  • Resources

CIDR has developed an extensive set of Resources on teaching and learning in higher education. View our online collection of Teaching Topics and CIDR Materials, or visit the CIDR Reading Room to browse books and periodicals in our Resource Collection.
