In addition to working with individual instuctors on the design and teaching of their courses, CIDR staff are available to consult with departments on the development of academic programs and curriculum.
- formulation of program or curriculum learning goals
- consultation on specific issues of teaching, learning, design, or assessment
- ongoing participation in curriculum or planning committee meetings
- identification of resources relevant to program planning efforts
- development of plans for piloting, implementing, and assessing newly designed programs
Recent program development projects that CIDR has contributed to include the following:
- Consulting on the development of a new junior core curriculum designed to be inquiry-based, interdisciplinary, and team taught. CIDR staff helped the planning committee work through questions of how to structure courses, design assignments, provide students with regular feedback on their learning, and evaluate the overall effectiveness of the curriculum.
- Meeting regularly with a curriculum committee as they revised a sequence of undergraduate courses from a focus on traditional topics in the discipline to an emphasis on the development of scientific reasoning skills, with the goal of preparing students for more advanced courses in the major. CIDR staff consulted on the articulation of learning goals for the newly revised course sequence, development of assignments, and assessment of learning in the new curriculum.
- Working with a group of faculty on integrating writing across the curriculum in their department. CIDR staff consulted on articulating curriculum and course goals, identifying ways in which writing could contribute to achieving course goals, devising writing assignments, and assisting faculty with strategies for assessing student writing.
