Working with TAs

Your TAs can serve not only as instructors and graders but also as ambassadors for the course, interpreters for your students, and vital sources of information for you. For graduate students, a teaching assistantship can be not only a source of short-term funding, but also a mentored experience for professional growth in effective communication, creativity, and leadership.

How can you provide the preparation and support for your TAs that will make it possible for both you and your TAs to get the most out of your working relationship? CIDR staff can consult with you about how to work most effectively with your TAs, given the content and structure of your course and the many demands on your time, and theirs.

Every CIDR consultation is customized to your specific needs and questions. Common questions that UW instructors raise include: What should we discuss when my TAs and I meet for the first time? How can I ensure consistency of grading across different TAs' sections? How can I tell if my TAs are doing a good job, and what kind of supervision they need?

For additional resources on working with your TAs, see CIDR's Resource page on Faculty and TAs.

If you would like to discuss these or any other TA-related questions with a CIDR consultant, please call 206-543-6588, or contact us by email to arrange an appointment.
