Using Writing as a Teaching Strategy

Integrating writing into a course is a powerful way to engage students in thinking and learning in your discipline. CIDR staff are available to consult with you on designing assignments, responding to student writing, assessment of student writing, and alternatives to traditional writing assignments:

Designing writing assignments
  • Develop essay exams and paper topics that are consistent with course objectives and teaching strategies.
  • Design course materials and activities that teach discipline-specific writing: methods of argument, use of evidence, format, and style.
  • Schedule assignments with opportunities for instructor or peer feedback at various stages before the final draft is turned in.
Responding to student writing
  • Develop commenting and evaluation strategies for student papers.
  • Prepare instructors, TAs, tutors, and readers to work with drafts of student papers.
  • Use peer critique and peer response groups to aid student paper revision.
  • Provide training for department-based and campus-wide writing center staff.
Assessing Student Writing
  • Develop grading criteria from assignment goals. In a multi-section course, workshops can be used to reach consensus among professor and TAs on goals of assignments and criteria for grading.
  • Introduce writing portfolios as a way to assess student performance.
  • Develop strategies for obtaining mid-and end-of-quarter feedback from students on their writing activities and learning.
Creating Alternatives to Papers
  • Develop ungraded writing activities to serve as a prelude or alternative to formal papers, to enhance active learning, or focus class discussion. The design of any of these exercises is grounded in course goals and teaching strategies.
CIDR's Collection of Writing Resources
  • Online Resources developed by CIDR, others at UW, and other universities on integrating writing into courses.
