Perspectives: What Excludes Students?

A number things may communicate to students in a class, "you don't belong here" -- but many are variations on just a few themes, identified below.

With each of these themes, we have included statements which represent how it might be experienced by faculty members and by their students. Each page concludes with links to Stategies and Resources to help you start thinking about ways to respond.

Conveying disrespect, unfairness, or lack of confidence in students

Disregarding student backgrounds, preparation, or life events that affect learning

Interacting with only a subset of the students

Teaching in ways that favor particular backgrounds or approaches to learning
