  Planning the Course Syllabus

The form and content of a syllabus vary widely by discipline, department, course, and instructor.  In all cases, however, the syllabus provides the instructor and students with a common reference point that sets the stage for learning throughout the course.

This web site is designed as a supplement to CIDR Bulletin 9(3), Planning the Course Syllabus, which identifies components that are commonly included in a syllabus:

Course description

Topics and assignments

Policies and values that will guide your teaching of the course

Links on the left side of each page take you to a brief description for each syllabus component, along with examples that are taken from courses at UW. The site credits provide a complete list of UW faculty and TAs who have contributed examples to this web site.
