Most Chicanos
lived in Texas, California, and other southwestern
states. The Latino population of Washington State began to
grow in the 1940s, especially in the Yakima Valley where
people found work in agriculture.
In both regions, Chicanos faced prejudice
and discrimination. Jesus Rodriquez describes conditions
in Texas in the 1950s.
Jesus Rodriguez grew up in Texas, served in the army, then attended college. He moved to Seattle in 1971 to attend graduate school at UW. (1 min)
