A long history of activism

Mexican-American activism in the United States dates back to 1848, the year the United States annexed Northern Mexico.  Since that time, people of Mexican and Native descent have struggled for civil rights.

Translated literally, “la raza” means race.  In this context, it’s meaning is closer to “the people,” representing all people of Mexican and Mexican-American descent.
