Seattle’s Chinatown was invaded
and destroyed in 1886 and residents were forcibly expelled
from the city. The community slowly reestablished itself in the
following decades.
The Chong Wa Benevolent
Association was founded in 1910 and for decades represented the
community in negotiations with city and state officials. While not a
protest organization, Chong Wa played a critical role in
defending Chinese Americans and their interests.
