Milestone:
1935 intermarriage campaign
Seattle’s
first multi-racial civil rights coalition came together
in 1935 when segregationists proposed a state
law that would make racial intermarriage a crime.
African Americans, Filipino Americans, and Japanese
Americans worked together and managed to defeat the bill. Also joining the crusade were
left-wing unions and the Communist Party.
