1968:
Black Panther Party formed
The Black Panther Party
established its Seattle chapter in the spring of 1968, the first
to be created outside of California. Although the membership was
never large, the organization made a major impact
on the region.
Along
with Black Student Unions that formed on college and high
school campuses, the Panthers signaled a major shift
in goals and tactics in the African American community. Instead of demanding
integration, these organizations were committed to “Black Power.”
