1970: United Indians of All Tribes Retakes Fort Lawton
Led
by Bernie Whitebear, urban Indians occupied Fort Lawton (now
Discovery Park) in March of 1970. The action gained international media
attention and forced the city to negotiate with the United Indians of All
Tribes resulting in a 99 year lease for a 20 acre site within
the park. In 1977, UIATF completed the Daybreak Star
Indian Cultural Center.
