African-Americans in Seattle began protesting
discriminatory employment, housing, and other practices at the
turn of the century. Women were active from the very
beginning in church groups, social uplift organizations, and other
causes.
Susie
Cayton helped start the Seattle chapter of the NAACP (National Association
for the Advancement of Colored People) in 1913.
