In addition to protesting against discrimination, MEChA and other student groups protested against the Vietnam War.
Before the BSU sit-in there were only a
handful of Latino students at UW. As
numbers increased in 1969, Chicanos created a UW organization
that later became El Movimiento de Estudiantes Chicanos
de Aztlan (MEChA).
Asian-American students formed the Asian
Student Coalition in 1970. Native students formed the Indian
Student Association.
