Programs: Seminar In Rome
Classical Seminar in Rome
The Department offers a program in Rome in the Spring Quarter for advanced undergraduate majors and graduate students in Classics. This program includes a course in Roman topography, a seminar in Latin, and work in Greek and Latin to fit the needs of the individual students. The Classics program is conducted in the Palazzo Pio, the University of Washington's newly renovated facility in Rome. The Palazzo is located in the historic center of Rome, the area within the bend of the Tiber River which has been occupied continuously since Etruscan times. This seventeenth-century structure sits on the foundations of the ancient theater of Pompey, built in 55 B.C. The Palazzo faces the Piazza Biscione and Campo de' Fiori, one of Rome's busiest open-air markets. Since the mid-sixteen hundreds, the Palazzo has housed in succession a family church, an archaeological school, studios for artists, and a small theater. Renovations on the building began in 1984. It is equipped with classrooms and a library. The Classical Seminar in Rome is designed to allow students to continue their work in Greek and Latin while studying the ancient city of Rome itself.
