Internships

LSJ 401 Fieldwork Internship
The Law, Societies, & Justice internship program seeks to create a connection between academic coursework and 'real world' experience. The objectives of the internship are to

(1) Provide students with insights into the workings of law in practice;

(2)To scrutinize and 'test' some of the theories and concepts found in the literature against 'real world' practice;

(3) To initiate career development and goals, and

(4) To provide 100 hours of local community service.

Students work with a variety of governmental and non-governmental agencies and organizations, including private law firms, federal law enforcement agencies, and social service organizations (see the Internship Listings for complete information. It is the student's responsibility to find an internship, although the LSJ adviser can help you find a suitable one.

Before students can be registered for 401, they must:
-Find an internship. A listing of approved internships is available under Internship Listings, but students should not restrict themselves to this list. Instead, students may arrange an internship with agencies that reflect their own LSJ interests. The LSJ adviser can help suggest agencies or sites that might be suited to student interests. Also, students are encouraged to directly contact organizations in the community that interest them. Treat these contacts as job interviews, with an awareness that some agencies may not have worked with interns before and may need your assistance in defining how your educational goals intersect with their purpose and needs. Remember: the LSJ adviser can assist you in all stages of this process, from articulating your interests and goals to determining which organizations would be appropriate for the internship requirement.

-Set up an appointment/ interview with the agency and/or send in your resume and other requested materials as soon as possible.

-Work out the details of your internship with your supervisor. Ask your supervisor to write a letter stating the nature of your internship. This should be on agency letterhead and include: the agency name and address, name of your supervisor, his/her title, telephone number and location, projects that will be assigned to you as an intern, and hours/days/schedule to be worked.

-Attach the letter to your completed internship application/contract (click here to download) (also available in the LSJ advising office, Gowen 42). Once the letter and contract are completed and turned in, the adviser will register you for 401.

401 Requirements: (1) Successful completion of a minimum of 100 hours of community service/field internship; (2) An Organizational Profile (5-8pp.);(3) Analytical Paper (6-8pp.); (4) Evaluations (downloadable .pdf files) (personal and supervisor); (5) At least one meeting with faculty supervisor during the quarter. Students must also attend one meeting at the start of the quarter to go over these requirements in more detail.

In addition to the required LSJ 401 Fieldwork Internship, LSJ students and pre-majors may complete internships in order to gain experience. While only LSJ students may register for 401, all students may complete an LSJ internship under the supervision of approved faculty. Pre-majors are encouraged to take advantage of this internship option prior to applying for the major. Please make an appointment with an LSJ adviser in Gowen 42 for additional information, help in identifying an internship, and necessary contracts.
