Okushiri Island Field Benchmark

Other data:

• Some improved bathymetry data has been provided by Barry Eakins at NOAA NGDC: [zip files]. The "barry_grids" are bathy and the "profile_grids" are the source displacement. But these are only bathymetry, missing topography values.

  He points out that 500m bathymetry for most of Japan is available at JODC and some of this is available at the link above as well, as a possible replacement for the A grid.

Challenges:

• The bathymetry data provided on the benchmark site does not fit together smoothly.

• Wave gauge and other observational data is missing. In PMEL-135 section 2.4 it is stated that "Predictions for the maximum runup at Aonae, Okushiri Island, Japan, should not differ by more than 20% from the measurements" but the measurements are missing, both from the benchmark page and from PMEL-135. Figure A35 shows tide gage data at two different locations, but digital versions are not available, nor is the exact location of these gages.

• Earthquake source data: The source data files are at the benchmark site have similar issues to the bathymetry files. The source files were generated from the source model DCRC-17a from the paper Source models for the 1993 Hokkaido Nansei-Oki earthquake tsunami by Tomoyuki Takahashi, Takeyuki Takahashi, Nobuo Shuto, Fumihiko Imamura and Modesto Ortiz, Pure and Applied Geophysics 144 (1995), pp. 747-767, DOI: 10.1007/BF00874393.   It is not stated how these files were generated, perhaps with the Okada model applied to the parameters from Table 3 of the above paper:
