Our Mission, Values, & Vision

CLUE is a free late-night, multidisciplinary study center housed in the Office of Undergraduate Academic Affairs at the University of Washington. Fundamental to CLUE's success are its state-of-the-art location in Mary Gates Hall, convenient evening hours, and the employment of current and recently graduated UW students and graduate students.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to provide high level academic support for the full range of UW undergraduates, from those who are under-prepared to those who are advanced. The Center brings students who might not otherwise interact academically and socially into learning communities with shared academic goals.

Values

Our work is guided by the overarching values of organic learning communities, concept-based academic support, team teaching, and scaffolding.

Organic Learning Communities We value facilitating the organization of organic learning communities - those that emerge because of students' shared needs, interests, or investments in their academic work.

Concept-based Academic Support Providing students with concept-based academic support creates independent learners who are able to advance their own academic progress.

Team Teaching Our tutors join our community of learners when they come to work at CLUE, and we consider team-teaching a core part of our educational philosophy.

Scaffolding We value empowering learners by meeting them at their current skill levels and providing scaffold support, allowing them to take risks and accept challenges.

Vision

Over the next few years, we envision CLUE as the connecting point for the entire undergraduate demographic. We will expand services to students who wish to take courses in academic support so that all students who need such support can receive it. At the same time, we will expand our service both in the course areas we already provide and add new subject areas. Finally, we envision a fully developed "CLUE at a Distance" program, providing podcasts of nightly instruction for students who have difficulty getting to campus in the evenings, expanding e-mail contact for students with tutors, and investigating electronic ways to extend students' participation in learning communities that originated with CLUE.
