Introduction

This course is designed to teach PET imaging and PET/CT applied to oncology, neurology and cardiology to physicians without prior PET experiences and to others who wish to broaden their skills and their use of clinical PET. The focus of the course will be PET imaging with (F-18) Fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) although the role of other tracers will be discussed when appropriate. the lectures will review the clinical PET literature for each tumor type and the role of PET in staging, tumor response to therapy and prognostic evaluation. The role of PET in dementia, epilepsy and cardiology will also be covered in detail. the application of PET to clinically relevant questions and the generation of quality PET images will be emphasized and clinical information and correlative imaging studies will be provided for comparison. The physics of PET/CT scanners and how to select such a system wil be covered in detail. Unique clinical applications of PET/CT, PET/CT imaging protocols and reporting will also be underscored. An important focus of the course will be the review of selected clinical cases.

Radiologists and nuclear medicine physicians in private practice or academic centers who wish to review or learn PET/CT and PET imaging in general

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this program, attendees should be able to:

Discuss the basic physical principles of PET (basic physics of coincidence detection, basic radiochemistry, and overview of image reconstruction process)
Discuss basic physics of multidetector CT and basic CT dosimetry
Discuss PET/CT physics, technology, equipment selection, and quality control
Discuss basic tumor biology, cerebral and cardiac physiology as it pertains to PET imaging
Describe the indications, strengths and limitations of FDG PET/CT applied to cancer imaging
Identify the unique clinical applications of PET/CT and how to develop PET/CT protocols
Interpret FDG PET/CT images of basic and advanced oncology cases
Recognize the potential of the new PET tracers for oncology imaging
Describe the roles of PET and PET/CT in the evaluation of dementia and epilepsy
Discuss relative merits of imaging coronary physiology with PET versus anatomy with CT
Recognize the unique potential of cardiac PET/CT
Discuss how PET/CT imaging impacts clinical management
