Introduction

This course provides an overview of travel medicine and global health. The course is geared to non-specialist physicians and other medical personnel who will care for those visiting the developing world, or those who live in developing nations. Topics relating to pre-travel care (including immunizations, and malaria prophylaxis) and post-travel care (work up of common medical complaints in the returned traveler, including fever and diarrhea) will be discussed. Additionally, topics related to global health, including aid work in complex humanitarian crises, and social determinants of health, will be discussed. Information will be presented to registrants in both plenary sessions and smaller workshop groups.

Who Should Attend?

This course is aimed at non-specialist medical providers, including physicians, nurse practitioners, physician's assistants and RNs. Additionally, allied health professionals, including pharmacists, dentists and social workers, would find this course of benefit.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this program, attendees should be able to:

• Review common threats to travelers to the developing world
• Review pre-travel measures to mitigate those threats.
• Understand the workup of common medical problems in returned international travelers
• Be cognizant of the relationship between social factors, e.g., poverty and health
• Summarize common facets of aid during complex humanitarian crises
