ADMISSION CRITERIA

For admission criteria regarding our distance learning program, please visit the Graduate Program in Construction Engineering web site.

For admission criteria regarding our Ph.D. program, please visit the Ph.D. Program in the Built Environment web site.

Admission Criteria for the Master of Science in Construction Management:

Undergraduate Degree Requirements and Pre-requisites:

Generally speaking, applicants must hold a baccalaureate degree (B.S. or B.A.) in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Building Technology, Architecture, or similar field from an accredited college or university in the United States, or its equivalent from a foreign institution.

Students with undergraduate degrees in an area other than Construction Management or Building Technology must demonstrate an understanding of estimating, project planning and control and project management either by transcript, validation examination or successful completion of the following courses:

CM 410 – Construction Estimating II (5 credits)
CM 411 – Project Planning and Control (3 credits)
CM 422 - Computer Applications in Construction (2 credits)
CM 421 – Project Management I (3 credits)

These pre-requisite courses could be completed either through the undergraduate program in Construction Management (day classes / admission to these classes is possible through University of Washington Educational Outreach as a non-matriculated undergraduate student.) or by enrolling in the UW Certificate Program in Construction Management. This certificate program is offered both on a traditional classroom environment (evening classes) and in an online format.

Since only graduate courses (500 or above) can be counted toward degree requirements, these pre-requisite courses will not be counted toward the 45 credits needed to earn a Master of Science in Construction Management.

Student with backgrounds others than the ones listed above may be admitted into the program on a case by case basis depending on relevant experience and motivation.  These students must take the following pre-requisites in addition to those previously listed:

CM 310 – Introduction to the Construction Industry
CM 313 – Construction Methods and Materials I
CM 320 or CM 311 – Construction Contract Documents
CM 323 – Construction Methods and Materials II
CM 331 – Construction Estimating I

Most of these 300-level prerequisites must be completed prior to the student being admitted into the graduate program.  These prerequisites are generally offered only during the day on a space-available basis with the undergraduate students.  Admission to these classes is possible through University of Washington Educational Outreach as a non-matriculated undergraduate student.

Grade Point Average, GRE, and TOEFL Requirements:

A grade point average of 3.0 or better is required for all students, based on the last 60 graded semester hours or last 90 graded quarter hours of undergraduate and graduate study.

All applicants must also submit Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores, a statement of goals and objectives, and letters of recommendation.

Information for International Applicants:

International applicants whose first language is not English must submit a valid Test of English as a Foreign Language or Michigan Language Test (MLT) score.  A minimum score of 580 (TOEFL) or 237 (TOEFLC), or 90 on the MLT is required for admission to the program.

The answers to frequently asked questions (FAQ) from international applicants can be be found at:

Information about the GRE Exam:

GRE scores are a standard requirement for admission to the UW Graduate School, and are required for admission to the Graduate Program in Construction Management. The requirement for the GRE may be waived for individuals who have earned an advanced degree (master's or higher) from accredited U.S. institutions.

To schedule a GRE exam, call 1-800-GRE-CALL, or see the GRE Web site at www.gre.org. To obtain copies of your GRE scores, call 1-888-GRE-SCORE.

The following codes should be used to direct your scores: University of Washington, code #4854, Department of Construction Management, code #5199.

Information about the TOEFL Exam:

Applicants who are not citizens of the United States must provide an official TOEFL score of at least 580 (237 on the computerized exam), unless they are citizens of Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, or the United Kingdom, or hold a bachelor's or advanced degree from an accredited institution in any of these countries. For information about the TOEFL, e-mail toefl@ets.org, call 609-771-7100, or visit www.toefl.org.

Graduate Non-matriculated Status (GNM):

For those who either are not sure about the degree or are concerned about their academic and professional backgrounds, another option is to enroll first as a graduate non-matriculated (GNM) student.  GNM students are not presently seeking a degree, but may apply a maximum of 12 graduate level credits toward degree requirements should they be accepted into a graduate program. It is important to note that acceptance as a GNM student does not imply admission to a graduate degree program.

The GNM application and instructions are available on-line.   Note that in Box #22 (Program to Which You Are Applying), you must fill in Construction Management. Please submit the completed application and required transcripts to the address listed in the instructions. In addition, please send a copy of the application form with a brief statement of objectives to the appropriate department.
