STUDENT PROFILES

M.S. Program in Construction Management:

Brook Maples

Brook Maples is a Civil Engineer who has spent the past 8 years developing a broad technical expertise within construction and civil engineering to obtain her Professional Engineer (PE) License. Now her mission is simple: "I want to be a leader in the best construction consulting firm in the U.S. To date, I have built a strong technical background and developed a good network within my industry. A UW Masters in Construction Management will help develop my project management skills which are essential to my career."

"The Masters in Construction Management program will give me the basic tools to run a service oriented building industry business and an understanding of the way successful businesses work. I believe it will also be helpful in learning the perspective of the different parties on the construction team, including engineers, architects, and contractors."

Distance Learning M.S. Program in Construction Engineering:

Kimberly Hakola

Kimberly Hakola was already a Husky.  But when it came time to pursue a graduate degree, she was more influenced by convenience and curriculum than by school loyalty.  "When I was looking at different degree programs, I realized I couldn't do a traditional program. My husband is an officer in the Marine Corps and we move a lot.  This program was the only one that I found that focused on the heavy construction industry. That's what interested me about the program – plus, it was my alma mater."

Kimberly said the online master's program allows her to keep working while doing schoolwork in the evenings and on weekends.  More important, it allows her to pursue the program regardless of where she lives.  She earned a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from the UW in 2000.  Since then, she's lived on or near military bases in Florida, Texas, North Carolina, and California.

Ph.D. Program in the Built Environment:

Namhun Lee

Namhun received a B.S from the Department of Architectural Engineering, Kyung-Hee University, Korea and an M.S. from the Department of Construction Management, University of Washington.  He is interested in situational simulation environments that apply artificial intelligence concepts.  Situational simulations in construction management provide learners with temporally dynamic clinical exercises with the objective of exposing participants to rapidly unfolding events and the pressure of quick decision-making.

His research focuses on the visualization situational simulation information through virtual reality platforms.  "What convinced me about joining this Ph.D. program was its inter-disciplinary nature.  Almost all established Ph.D. programs focus on traditional disciplinary specializations (that are exclusionary of one another). In contrast, the Ph.D. in the Built Environment seeks cooperation through cross-disciplinary education."  Namhun also believes that "major advances in research and discovery will be made at the interfaces between disciplines"
