The construction industry is one of the largest industries in the United States, employing over six million people at dispersed project sites throughout the nation. The University of Washington Construction Management program prepares graduates for exciting careers in this diverse industry. Graduates find positions with government agencies, private corporations, general contractors, specialty contractors, home builders, consulting firms, real estate developers, and construction material suppliers. Starting positions typically are field supervision, management, construction project planning and scheduling, cost estimating, or sales. The interdisciplinary curriculum contains a mix of technical, managerial, and business courses to provide graduates with the essential skills to be successful in the industry.
The first two years of our undergraduate program can be completed at the University of Washington (or other 4-year institutions) as a pre-major in the College of Arts and Sciences or at a community college. Emphasis is placed on a broad educational foundation and includes surveying, engineering graphics, accounting, business law, economics, physics, mathematics, geology, statistics, speech, English, social sciences, and humanities. Students are admitted to the upper division professional curriculum at the end of two years of study. The upper division curriculum includes structural analysis and design, construction methods and materials, mechanical and electrical systems, safety, estimating, project planning and control, project management, and business and management electives.
The program has enjoyed 100% placement of graduates during the past decade. Curricular feedback is obtained regularly from graduates and employers of graduates to improve program quality, and several program enhancements have been made in the past five years. In addition, the department has an active Industry Advisory Council that helps identify program curricular improvements.
