Description:
These
National Student Competitions are jointly sponsored by the Associated
Schools in Construction (ASC) and the Associated General Contractors of
America (AGC). They
typically are held in conjunction with the AGC Annual Convention.
Competitions are held in three categories:
commercial sponsored by Turner, design-build sponsored by
Mortenson, and heavy civil sponsored by Granite. In order to qualify for these national competitions, UW student teams must first participate in Regional Competitions, which are conducted each February in Reno, Nevada under the overall sponsorship of the Western Region of the Associated Schools of Construction. Student teams from universities in Washington, Oregon, and California compete with each other in four categories: commercial, design-build, heavy civil, and residential. Student teams are limited to six people in each of the competitions. The student teams are given a problem, which is either a construction project or a design and construct project and given 16 hours in which to develop their solutions and submit written proposals to the judges, who are all from industry. After the submissions have been turned in, each team makes an oral presentation to the judges regarding how they developed their proposal. The written and oral presentations are evaluated and scored using a prescribed set of criteria. The team scoring the most points in each category is the winner in that category. The first place teams in the commercial, design-build, and heavy-civil competitions at the Regional Competitions go on to compete at the ASC-ACG National Student Competitions. The individual sponsors of the Regional Competitions are: commercial – Hensel Phelps, design-build – Swinerton, heavy-civil – Granite, and residential – Morley Builders.
This National Student Competition is sponsored by the Mechanical Contractors Association of America (MCAA) and is conducted in conjunction with their annual convention. Student teams of six develop a proposal describing the design and construction of major mechanical systems for a construction project. The proposals are submitted in December and evaluated by the MCAA staff. The four highest ranked teams are invited to make oral presentations at the MCAA annual convention, at which time the winner is selected.
This National Student Competition is sponsored by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and occurs at their annual convention. Teams of six students prepare detailed proposals for the development of a residential project and make an oral presentation to judges at the NAHB annual convention. The sponsor of the competition problem is Centex Homes.
