The Undergraduate Construction Management Program prepares graduates for exciting careers in the construction industry. The program is nationally accredited by the American Council for Construction Education (ACCE). Emphasis is on course work that enables graduates to develop:

Technical skills necessary to define and solve practical construction problems.

Managerial skills necessary to make and implement sound and timely decisions in a prudent and professional manner.

Broader perspectives of humanities, social, and natural sciences; and

The ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
The professional curriculum is concentrated in the upper division during a typical student’s junior and senior years. The first two years can be completed at the University of Washington (or other 4-year institution) as a pre-major in the College of Arts and Sciences or at a community college.

Summer Quarter (no credits):
The purpose of the Summer Internship Program is to expose a student of Construction Management to the widest possible range of construction management tasks and site operations. Each student is placed with a local construction firm for one summer of internship. At the end of the summer, the employer will fill out an evaluation form rating the student’s performance during the summer and is invited to attend the formal presentation of the student’s report. Employers can be involved in any aspect of the construction industry. It is hoped that each student will be placed in a learning situation, with exposure to as many facets of construction management and/or building technology as possible. This is exclusive of any monetary compensation negotiated between the student and employer.
Applicants must have completed a minimum of 45 Construction Management credits by the end of the Spring quarter. Those students who have their own prospects for summer employment with construction firms and who meet the above criteria, are required to notify the Department by completing an application form. The student must receive approval by the Department to use his/her summer employment for the internship program. A number of unfilled positions are sometimes offered to the Department by participating firms. A selection process is usually used to match students with prospective employers.

CM 413 - Competitive Business Presentations:
This 1-credit elective course is offered by the Department of Construction Management during the Autumn quarter every year. The objective of this course is to teach students how to prepare and deliver technical presentations that will be required in many other construction management courses and during student competitions. If you are interested in participating in the competitions, you must take this course during your junior year as a requirement for eligibility.
Scheduling Electives:
The scheduling of construction science electives and upper division electives shown in the curriculum above is a sample of how those electives could be fit into the program. Each student must schedule her or his own elective courses in consultation with their faculty adviser.
Students must complete a total of 92 quarter credits. The core courses account for 74 credits, the construction elective courses account for 6 credits, CM 301/BCMU 301 accounts for 4 credits, and the upper division electives make up the remaining 8 credits.
