Toward Open Science: scientists and journalists discuss the ‘arsenic life’ saga

“Last December, Felisa Wolfe-Simon announced the discovery of a microbe that could change the way we understand life in the universe. Soon she found herself plunged into a maelstrom of bitter backlash and intemperate criticism.” – so begins a Popular Science article about this 10-month saga, which prompted both a Discovery blog response by Carl Zimmer, and then thoughtful, complex comments from both authors and other science journalists.  An insightful example of the struggle of scientists and the media to bring the process of science into the public eye.
