Whale of a sight on Burien beach

Hundreds of people turned out over the weekend to Seahurst Park in Burien to see a dead whale that washed ashore there Saturday morning. The fin whale, not common to Puget Sound, may have been dead for a week, wildlife officials said.  Read more in the Seattle Times.

Recent Antarctic climate, glacier changes at the ‘upper bound’ of normal

In the last few decades, glaciers at the edge of the icy continent of Antarctica have been thinning, and research has shown the rate of thinning has accelerated and contributed significantly to sea level rise.  Read more in UW Today.

Tsunami debris could be found in Washington’s annual beach cleanup

This month’s annual beach cleanup may turn up items from the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami that devastated Japan more than two years ago.  Read more in UW Today.

Space-age domes offer a window on ocean acidification

A row of space-age domes off the Washington coast may provide a peek at the future. Not the future of space travel, but of climate change and the effects of increasingly acidic oceans.  Read more in UW Today.
