Engage science communication group launches student blog

Engage, an organization of graduate students in scientific disciplines across UW, helps scientists talk about their work to non-science audiences. They offer a seminar course and a chance to speak at Town Hall, and now their students are blogging about their experiences. Check out the first post, by physics PhD candidate Alan Jamison, called “Hoping to Share Some Science“!

New “BioDiverse Perspectives” blog features CoEnv student scientists

Emerging from an interdisciplinary conversation about how to advance knowledge of biodiversity, BioDiverse Perspectives is a blog intended to be a space for graduate students with an interest in biodiversity to share thoughts about important issues in our field. Bloggers focus on reviews of papers that they consider to be Foundational or Frontier in the biodiversity science. CoEnv graduate students Hillary Burgess and Fletcher Halliday are among the contributors. Check out Hillary’s post about citizen science!

Tackling climate change at home: a Q & A with Lisa Graumlich – Forterra

Last month, a representative from Forterra sat down with Dean Graumlich to talk about climate change and how we in the Pacific Northwest could address it. Check out this interview (page 8 of the PDF) as they discuss her early inspiration to study climate change, her academic focus, tackling the climate change problem in the Pacific Northwest, potential solutions and more!

Conversations on Defining Diversity: Student Soldiers

How are choosing to study the environment and choosing to serve in the military compatible?  Does military service change a student’s perspective?  Does it change how others see her/him?  Can the reality of a military experience enhance, or impede, learning?  Should instructors engage the soldiers among their students? Join us on November 13th as we hear from 4 student soldiers about their experience in – and out – of the classroom.
