Bering Sea Project shows us what researchers actually do out on the ice

All work and no play makes researchers… cold, maybe. Check out these fun videos from JISAO‘s Bering Sea Synthesis Project, capturing both research and recreation as these scientists seek to understand the impact of sea-ice on the ecosystem and climate of the eastern Bering Sea. No one can watch just one!

NOAA, National Archives wants you! to help digitize old ship records

A new crowdsourcing effort could soon make of the  weather data from old ship logs, some more than 150 years old, available to climate scientists worldwide. JISAO is involved in this awesome new project; read more here!

Shifting winds in the Arctic could significantly impact lower latitudes – AccuWeather

Higher pressure over the North American continent and Greenland are driving recent changes in the wind patterns across the Arctic, which are impacting sea ice and could bring changes to the weather across North America and Europe, according to a new study from JISAO. Read more about this study here.

Shifting early-summer Arctic winds may be increasing variable weather

Following a study of the last six summers’ worth of climate data, researchers have linked a change in summer Arctic wind patterns to global warming and an increase in the unpredictable weather. Co-authors on this study include JISAO‘s James Overland and Muyin Wang. Read more about the study here, or check out the in-press abstract.

Sunny days, but winter weather will come – Seattle Times

The sunny, dry streak that the Pacific Northwest has been under has been beautiful, flammable and a bit eery. Now, as the first possibility for real precipitation in about 3 months looms in the forecast, it’s time to discuss what our winter might look like — and how we might prepare. State climatologist Nick Bond, and ATMO‘s Cliff Mass, are mentioned, read more here!
