2012 will be an exciting year for the Ocean Observatories Initiative, with continued construction of the cabled ocean observatories network and multiple other facets of the project. In this article, Oceanography’s John Delaney discusses the planetary ocean, how the Ocean Observatories Initiative will allow for collaborative science on giant data sets, and the importance of such scale in dealing with current threats to our planet’s life support. Mexican sound artist Hugo Solis, a graduate of the University of Washington’s Center for Digital Arts and Experimental Media’s Ph.D. program, looks to an underwater volcano for data and inspiration in his new installation, “Axial.” John Delaney, leader of the National Science Foundation’s Regional Scale Nodes program, collaborated on the project.
