SMEA staff wins PSO ProStaff Award

The University of Washington’s Professional Staff Organization announced the newest winners of the PSO ProStaff Award. Among the three recipients is Suanty Kaghan, Administrative Specialist for the School of Marine and Environmental Affairs. Award recipients are chosen based on their impact, their UW values, their dissemination of knowledge and information, and their tendency to go above and beyond their job expectations. Do you work with a staff member who exemplifies these traits? Nominate them for this award, which is given in the fall and the spring. Congratulations to Suanty!

AAAS Notebook profiles faculty views from the annual meeting – UW News

Last week’s annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science was replete with great new research being shared with scientists, the media, and the general public. UW News covers some of it here; CoEnv’s Patrick Christie, Nate Mantua and David Battisti are mentioned.

Our Oceans, Our Future: upcoming symposium at UW focuses on human-ecological connections

The School of Marine and Environmental Affairs in UW’s College of the Environment is hosting a symposium on the afternoon of February 15th that will examine how humans interact with the sea.  Lead by Dr. Patrick Christie, the event will explore pressing environmental issues facing our oceans, how those issues connect to human communities, and how to help create pathways to sustain the two.  This event will share information generated after a two-day intensive workshop with scientists and practitioners.  The symposium is open to the public – click here to read more.

College grad students win fellowships to work with state agencies – UW News

Bridget Emmet, Heather Gibbs and Clara Hard, of the School of Marine and Environmental Affairs, were awarded the Hershman Fellowhsip, created by Washington Sea Grant in 2008 to introduce students to ocean and coastal policy and enable state agencies to benefit from the students’ knowledge and experience on those subjects.
