Academics and Advising
The University of Washington features some of the world's best academic units in many areas of the environment, earth science and natural resources. These programs are renowned for their academic excellence and innovative learning methodologies. They also offer students opportunities to engage in research individually and on interdisciplinary teams, working side-by-side with faculty and other professionals to address significant real-world research and application problems.
To learn more about opportunities for students, please contact the advising staff, who can help you match your interests with opportunities at the UW and create an academic plan to match your career goals. Advisors can introduce you to opportunities available in each specific program, including internships, undergraduate research opportunities, scholarships, new and one-time course offerings, and special events.
General questions on College of the Environment offerings and degree programs can be directed to Michelle Hall (Director of Student and Academic Services) at hallm@uw.edu or 206-543-6233. For program-specific inquiries, please refer to contact information below.
Resources for Students
Declaring a major in the College of the Environment
If you are an undergraduate and know which major you want to complete, the best option is to declare that major as soon as possible (so you are meeting directly with an adviser from that program, you have access to courses restricted to majors, etc). If you are pretty sure you know which major you want, you should contact the adviser for that program in the chart at the bottom of this page.
Become a pre-major in the College of the Environment
If you are currently a pre-major (undeclared student not enrolled in a specific degree program), you now have a new option!
Declare yourself a “Pre-Environmental Student” in the College of the Environment. You’ll be updated regularly about environmental events, classes, scholarships, etc. and may have greater access to courses that are restricted to students outside the college. Contact Michelle Hall at with your name, student number and a note that you’d like to change your pre-major status to the College of the Environment.
