Fahed Al-Sumait

Fahed is in the Ph.D. program but still isn’t sure what to study. So far his work broadly deals with various intersections between people of North America and the Middle East, usually with something media-related thrown into the mix.

Monique Lacoste

Monique is a first year PhD student who spends much of her time researching nasty subjects that make her angry, including media representations of sexual violence, racism and post-feminism. Though it pains her to admit it, she consumes excessive amounts of tv and music, likes arguing with people over the internet and wishes she had more time to enjoy the pile of fantasy novels and anime films currently cluttering her nightstand.

Rebecca Clark

Rebecca studies power and ideology (inequities generated by and organized around race, gender, capitalism, sexuality and nation) as propagated through popular knowledges - music, television, film, and daily talk. As such, she spends many an hour watching trashy television (while claiming it's for academic purposes), deconstructing music videos, and ruining movies for her partner. This year, she is: pondering the style of her next tattoo, trying to figure out the bluegrass-punk movement in California, committed to learn how to snowboard, and trying to decide whether or when to reproduce offspring.

Vanessa Au

Vanessa is a second year PhD student whose research examines anti-Asian imagery and discourse in the media and popular culture. She dislikes long walks on the beach but enjoys snowboarding, watching Asian American films, telling self-deprecating jokes, and eating uni.
