My name is Yonas Ghebretnsae and I am 34 years old. I am a 4th year student of Sociology and Social Work department at the University of Asmara. Generally I am interested in any social work issues, but especially the development of social work in sub-Saharan Africa.

I was born and raised until the age of 9 in Asmara, a city of about 400,000-500,000 people. Asmara is an Italian built colonial city with an altitude of 2350m above sea level. My father has died when I was 7 but my mother is still alive. I have a sister and three brothers. At the age of 9 my mother took us (me, my 3 younger brothers and my elder sister) to join the EPLF, an armed straggle for independence. And I have spent almost 1/3 of my life with this front and came back to Asmara in 1991. I am married in 2001 and I have two daughters the elder with 3 years of age and the younger of 8 months.

In my extra time I like to read books and watch TV. Especially in the evenings I like walking with my wife and playing with my kids. I also like to walk on the streets of Asmara and meet friends and have coffee with.

I have a plan to continue my education some time in the future. After my graduation form Asmara University I would like to work as a social worker in any governmental or non-governmental agencies working in this country.

Since I was a child I have wanted to be an instructor (teacher) I was inspired by the value a teacher had in our society.

I feel I am useful to society because I am learning a new field (Social Work) which our society has never experienced before and is a need of.

Thank you,

Yonas Ghebretnsae
