2003 Student Projects

Horn of Africa Families and Schools Together

We are working with our partner agency Horn of Africa Services (HOAS) to
design a project that will help bridge the gap between East African newcomer families and the public schools. HOAS is conducting parent forums among East African parents who live in the three garden communities of Rainier Vista, Yesler Terrace, and High Point in order to address concerns and answer questions about the schools. In addition to the parent forums, we are meeting with agency and school personnel to assess and document information that can be used by HOAS to develop programs to foster better parent-school cooperation and communication. The outcomes of the project will include a project design and a proposal for funds.

National Union of Eritrean Women
Seattle and UW School of Social Work Resource Development Collaboration

The purpose of this project is to work with the Seattle branch of the National Union of Eritrean Women (NUEW) develop social service resources in areas prioritized by their members. Following interviews with members of the organization, a description of needs and project statement will be formulated with the participation of the board. Through the identification of the needs of NUEW we hope to help build a base that will assist the organization in developing possible funds and service support. Also important is the identification of the services needed with the most urgency by the members of NUEW, the strengths and support the community has in implementing possible interventions / services, and help identifying possible inter-organizational networks and resources. Outcomes of the project will also include tools such as a brochure and possibly a website that may be of use to the organization.
