Workshop on Quantitative Microscopy

The Histology and Imaging Core (HIC) at South Lake Union (SLU) is a centralized core resource that provides the facilities, personnel, and expertise required to assist investigators obtain high-quality data from tissues and cells. The Core provides state-of-the-art support and training in histology, immunohistochemistry, image analysis, live-cell imaging, veterinary pathology, which are all essential components for translational research. This core is open to all investigators at the University of Washington and to investigators outside of the UW.

Key Advantages for Users of the HIC at SLU

  • Access to histology services including tissue processing, embedding, sectioning, and special stains including Movat’s Pentachrome (Figure 1).
  • Access to the expertise for immunohistochemistry (IHC). When applicable investigators will have access to the Leica Bond an automated system for IHC (Figure 2).
  • Access to state-of-the-art digital imaging with bright-field, epifluorescent, and whole slide digital microscopy (Olympus NanoZoomer Digital Pathology Microscope).
  • Access to the Deltavision Core for live-cell imaging.
  • Access to software to make quantitative measurements from digital images (VisoPharm, Nikon Elements, and ImagePro Software).
  • The HIC at SLU provides a nexus for interactions and synergy among groups using histology and digital imaging for their research.
