BAR-CODE CENSUS OVERVIEW

  • All animal cages must be identified with a barcode, which must be visible at ALL TIMES. Barcodes can be positioned vertically or horizontally.
  • The barcode number is below the barcode itself and consists of a 10 digit number.
  • The barcode will track:
    • Principal Investigator Name
    • Protocol Number
    • Budget Number
    • Cage Card Number
    • Requisition Number
    • Housing Mode (i.e. centralized SPF, centralized BL-2, decentralized, etc.)
    • Facility Name and Room Number
    • Date of Activation
    • Date of Deactivation
  • Census charges are accrued based on the date the cage card is activated and deactivated.
  • Newly purchased animals from Approved and Non-Approved Vendors will receive a preprinted, activated cage card with a barcode.
  • New animal cages that are created as a result of weaning or separating will need to:
    • Order extra cage cards via the online submission form.

      -Or-

    • Fill out a blank barcoded perforated cage card and copy the information from the previous cage card.
  • Complete the bottom activation strip, including the date of activation, tear off this strip and place into the drop box inside the room.
