ANATOMIC PATHOLOGY

Necropsy- A typical necropsy includes gross external examination of the submitted specimen, dissection, examination of internal organs, collection of tissue samples for histopathology, lesion interpretation and reporting. Depending on the individual diagnostic case or research needs, other samples for clinical pathology, serology, parasitology, microbiology or diagnostic PCR may also be collected. Digital photography is also available.

Histopathology-Services include trimming of fixed tissues and biopsies, routine processing, paraffin embedding, sectioning and staining of slides with hematoxylin and eosin. Histological sections are examined by a pathologist who will interpret the findings are prepare a report. Special stains, immunohistochemistry and sectioning of frozen OCT-embedded tissues are also available.

Slide Preparation and Interpretation – Full histopathological services including trimming of fixed biopsies or tissues, routine processing, sectioning and staining with hematoxylin and eosin. Histologic sections are interpreted and a report prepared.

Slide Preparation Only – Fixed submitted tissues or biopsies are trimmed, paraffin embedded, sectioned and stained. The finished slides are mailed to the client.

Slide Interpretation Only – Finished slides are submitted to the pathologist for examination, interpretation and preparation of a report.

Photography- Nikon digital photography is available to document gross lesions and histopathological findings.

Special Techniques- Special histological stains and immunohistochemistry are available. Please contact the Pathology Unit for more information.
