PARASITOLOGY
Rodents may harbor internal
or external parasites that may interfere
with research and importation. Both
external and internal parasites of
rodent are highly infectious, but treatable.
Detection is possible in live animals
as well as post-mortem.
Ectoparasites
Pelt Examination-Pelts obtained at necropsy are chilled and examined
microscopically for the presences of
external parasites.
Endoparasites
Cellophane Tape Test- Cellophane tape is placed against the perineum
of live 3-5 week old animals and examined
for pinworm ova. Ova are speciated
based on size and shape. Three to five-week-old
live animals are preferred for these
examinations.
Cecal Content Exam- Cecal and proximal colonic contents are examined
with a magnifying glass for presence
of oxyruids (pinworms).
