Human population growth and consumption is placing ever-increasing demands on the environment. By some estimates the world is losing 75 species each day from human-related activities. Yet, there is a serious lack of quantitative techniques to monitor these environmental impacts.
Most desperately needed are techniques to quantify change in the abundance and distribution of endangered species as well as the degree to which these species are disturbed by human pressures in remote areas. Such data indicate the seriousness of the problem, where the problems lie, and the urgency for and effectiveness of mitigation.
The Center meets these needs through a combination of applied research, education, and public outreach opportunities.
