Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Counseling Center, and who is it for?

The Counseling Center is a mental health resource where currently-enrolled students can receive assistance with adjustment issues, depression, anxiety, relationship concerns, and a variety of other challenges.  The Counseling Center is staffed by psychologists and mental health counselors who provide developmentally-based counseling, assessment, and crisis intervention services. Click to learn more about our services.

Note: Employees attending the UW on the Tuition Exemption Program, UW Extension students, and non-matriculated students are not eligible for services at the Counseling Center. Evening degree students are eligible.

How do I sign up for counseling?

If you are interested in counseling, please call (206) 543-1240 or stop by 401 Schmitz Hall to make an appointment for an intake interview. At the intake, you will have the opportunity to talk about your concerns and learn about our services. If it appears that the Counseling Center would be the most appropriate place for you to receive further assistance, you and the intake counselor will determine which of our services might best serve your needs.

Who will my counselor be?

Our senior staff includes psychologists and masters-level counselors who offer a broad range of interests, approaches, backgrounds, and perspectives. Although they function primarily as generalists, they do have areas of special interest and expertise.

In keeping with our role as a training facility at the University of Washington, we also have pre-doctoral interns and practicum counselors who work under the supervision of the senior staff. Your intake counselor will work with you to arrange an appropriate match, if you will be returning to the Center for additional sessions. Read more about our staff.

Do you offer couple counseling? What if my partner isn't a UW student?

We offer couple counseling to currently enrolled UW-Seattle students and their partners. To get started, simply call or come in to schedule a couple intake appointment at a time when both you and your partner can attend.

How long are counseling sessions, and how much do they cost?

There is no charge for most of our services; there is a nominal fee (payable in cash or check) for the following career services:

  • Career Assessment Interpretive Workshop $20.00 each
  • Individual Career Assessment Interpretation $40.00 each

The University charges $25 for Non-Sufficient Funds (NSF) checks; the Counseling Center's budget is automatically charged both the amount of the fine and the amount of the check. It is UW policy that the fine and the NSF amount are paid to the Counseling Center in cash. Fees are subject to change.

Does the Counseling Center offer career counseling?

We offer both group and individual counseling to help students sort through career-related issues. You may use career counseling sessions to discuss values, interests, abilities, and other concerns related to career decision-making. We also offer career assessment tools that may help you as you begin the career-search process. Check out Career Exporation to learn more about career counseling.

Does the Counseling Center offer help with study skills?

The Counseling Center provides free, weekly Study Smarter Workshops to help students develop more effective study skills. In addition, students can schedule individual counseling sessions to address issues such as procrastination, test anxiety, and time management difficulties.

If I receive counseling at the Center, can anyone find out about it?

The counseling process is confidential, which means that we cannot release any information about you except under certain legally prescribed conditions. If you have concerns or questions about confidentiality, please discuss them with your intake counselor.

Does the Counseling Center offer any special programs for campus groups?

Groups and departments throughout the University contact us regularly to request special programs and presentations. We welcome these requests, and try to fulfill as many as possible each quarter. Click to learn more about requesting an outreach program.
