Bio
Tanika Sarkar is a Professor of Modern History at the Centre for Historical Studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi, India. Dr. Sarkar is one of the foremost scholars of South Asian history working today, and many of her publications, including Hindu Wife, Hindu Nation and Bengal, 1928-1934: The Politics of Protest, have become standard text for scholars of women's histories and social movements in colonial and post-colonial India. Her more recent research focuses on the rise of the Hindu right and particularly on the implications and impacts for women in the emergence of contemporary right-wing Hindu movements in India. Dr. Sarkar was in residence at the Simpson Center for the Humanities from October 1 - November 30, 2005.
